Education Interview – Kate Putnam

I interviewed Kim Sekera: Head School Councilor of Oyster River High School

Our interview went well, Kim is a very down to earth, caring Mother of three and was great to interview.

How long have you been in Education?
Since 1996

What is your favorite part of your day?
That there is no schedule, I can go from talking to an Ivy League School about a top student to talking to DCYF about a student who is neglected. And it can change within the minute.

What does a Guidance Counselor do now?
The expectations of this role have changed since I was in High School, now the National Board of School Councilors is trying to change our name to School Councilors so that we can better fit our role.
The three things that we focus on are:
1. Personal and social development
2. Academic development
3. Career advice
We also plan all social gatherings at the High School and be sure to integrate everyone into the system.

What is once piece of advice you’d give your students tomorrow?
“There are multiple paths you can take to get to where you want to be.”
